2d City’s Midway 2d 2 None In Flight Delay

Flight delays & cancellations at major US airports are spreading faster than Covid, but Chicago’s Int’l Midway being listed as the “worst” is no surprise as its runway’s little bigger than its WWII aircraft carrier namesake …

As it happens, I recently visited the moth-balled USS Midway in San Diego Harbor, now serving as a must-see aviation museum. But, frankly, Sweet Home Chicago’s Midway is also a museum piece & it’s hard to fathom how it can be called an “airport” let alone an “international” one. Sad, but true. I still recall living during the 1950s a few blocks from Midway when Da Mayor Richard J. Daley boasted on signage how it was “The World’s Busiest Airport.” We lived on a street parallel to one of the main runways & would wave to the 4-engine continental airplane pilots as the flew over the neighborhood tavern named “Runway Inn.” Legend has it they landed EVERY SEVEN SECONDS moments later. It’s also where I saw my first & only UFO during a midnight stroll ala the foolish kids in "Stranger Things". But, I digress.

As the WSJ reported and per FlightAware stats, “most of the 100 busiest airports worldwide [recently] have had at least 20% of their flights delayed. At Canada’s two airports in Toronto and Montreal, late departures reached a surreal 50% rate. Midway? “Only” 38.3% of its flights have been delayed. True, New York’s JFK is high on the list. But, wouldn’t Da Mayor, may he RIP, still be bursting with pride in knowing Midway still held on to some aviation title?
