Affirmative Action Turned On Kids Heads?
My Sweet Home Fairfax County Va is accused of “New Structural Racism” by allegedly undercutting high schoolers shot at merit scholarships, but can’t same be said of NJ Gov’s crusade against Charter Schools?
As the WSJ editorial argued: “In Northern Virginia, affirmative action has hardened into a war on high achievers.” Indeed, as the US Supreme Court now weighs a possible landmark decision on Harvard’s and North Carolina U’s use of race preferences in admissions, the editors suggest, “Northern Virginia today offers a snapshot of how affirmative action, intended as a benevolent effort to prevent discrimination, has hardened into an ugly war on achievement.” As the op ed explains, local schools mysteriously failed to timely let National Merit Scholarship winners know of their recognition, which can mean the difference between getting a college scholarship or not. The ruse charge was denied, but the WSJ didn’t buy it. Interestingly, in an earlier op ed, the newspaper asked “Why Does New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy Hate Charter Schools” when studies show kids in Charter schools outperform their public school counterparts in the state BY 300%?
Of course, WSJ’s reference to a cultural “war” is the boogeyman in this unfortunate situation allegedly being fostered by progressives, and if so, it’s simply hard to see how their treating the struggling students among us like incompetents will lift them into the real world’s ranks of achievers. Some benevolent effort to prevent discrimination, huh?
