Ever wonder why few talk about breaking up the street gangs shooting up our cities? In WSJ’s “Crime Is No Longer a Family Business in Chicago,” Joseph Epstein finally articulates how Al Capone’s “Outfit” & the larger “Syndicate” of the Italian & Jewish persuasion were “brutal but not random like violence in the 21st century.” Replacing illegal prostitution, gambling & booze with drugs will do that. But, he also argued the only hope for turning back the clock to Big Al’s controlled violence was a crackdown on today’s gangs. Yet, one wonders if something more still needed?

Mr. Epstein wonders “if a start might be made by banishing” all progressive talk about the city thugs being misunderstood victims of a nasty America who need to be understood by shrinks; he’d replaced it with “enforcing heavy penalties for gun crimes.” That crackdown logic WILL get the bangers’ attention as it once did under a Mayor Daley or Giuliani.

Yet, even the naïve progressives who are letting criminals free to roam so they can talk to a social worker would be less wrong if only they’d get their heads out of their butts long enough to simply say something more than enforcing the law is needed to stop the carnage in the long run. Mr. Epstein suggests the bangers “get a job,” forgetting that they already have one as murderous enforcers for their gangs. No, even more than a “job” the real solution has more to do with would-be gang recruits finding a good school, then, keeping their butts in the classroom. No good schools around? Build ‘em with the tax money DEMS have always controlled. It’s the one thing the Mafia chieftains of old understood, i.e., that the only way for their kids to escape dad’s world of violence was a marketable college or trade education so they could live out their lives with a LEGITIMATE job in a LEGITIMATE business ala The Godfather. Figure it out Insane Whatever recruits & listen to Malcolm X from his grave. Millions already have. The smart brothers & sisters have escaped your inner city prisons & are now living the Dream.
