Bears Can’t Beat Pack But Can Cowboy It To Arlington?
Fox’s Tucker Carlson may have called Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot “demented” for crazy policies, but he never said she was stupid. Fox quotes her as telling the Bears to “beat the Packers” for once & save their threats to leave the city if they aren't given a modern stadium.
On this latest Windy City controversy, the lightheaded Mayor’s calling the Bears’ bluff does score some points. The Bears have historically threatened to move their team out of Chicago to suburban Arlington Heights, where an old race track waits to be replaced by a spiffy new billion dollar stadium – that’s how they squeezed millions in renovations to the city’s ancient Soldiers Field not so long ago (thereby turning the once iconic lakefront edifice built in 1922 to look like a Roman coliseum into a modern “UFO”). Never mind the insane traffic jams that would be created in the quiet suburban town. Or, that Illinois’ near bankrupt state & local communities can’t afford to pay their electric bills without issuing millions more in bonds let alone subsidizing a new sporting venue for a team that can’t beat the Packers.
But, here’s where Lightfoot may be blind-sided after all. The Bears now have the precedent of the Dallas Cowboys moving their team to a multi-billion dollar retractable domed stadium in Arlington, Texas and it’s a veritable money-making machine for, well, everybody, including state & local pols. Even a lightheaded mayor knows what’s the average temperature in Chicago during November and December.
