Biden Double Down On EV Double Crosses Detroit?
The WSJ notes how “Biden Takes Detroit for a Ride” by re-upping EPA fuel economy standards, supposedly in return for promised electric car subsidies to the city’s auto barons but that just evaporated into thin air. Disillusion finally sets in at Motown ala Evita’s failed leadership, yet can anyone be heard singing “Don’t Cry For Me Detroit”?
As the editorial board noted: “Political theater can be more entertaining than what’s on TV. It’s hard not to get a chuckle watching auto makers get double-crossed by the Biden Administration after they worked so hard to promote its electric-vehicle agenda. In the latest comic turn, the Administration last week issued new fuel-economy standards that effectively mandate that electric cars make up 17% of auto sales in 2026, up from about3% this year. [But] that was the day after Sen. Joe Manchin rejected President Biden’s Build Back Better plan, which includes a cornucopia of EV subsidies.”
As the EPA Michael Regan said, his agency’s new rules are “the most ambitious” ever, even more so than Obama’s, “which the Trump Administration scaled back after the auto makers complained [rightly so] they were too tough.” BTW, the final fuel standards are even more strict than what the EPA proposed this summer, hence, the “double cross” claim. What’s that other song about Detroit? “Don’t Stop Believin Anything’s Possible in Joe’s Plan for the World”?
