Biden’s Great Choice: Be Like Abe & Mike Or AOC &?
If he wants to make history like Lincoln or even be like Mike, Joe Biden won’t blacklist all Trumpian bureaucrats.
Towards the end of the Civil War, No. 16 was confronted by radical Republicans who wanted to bar conservatives from an expected Reconstruction effort. As historian Doris Kearns Goodwin noted, however: “Lincoln refused to be coerced into choosing one faction or the other…and resented the [more allied] radical’s demand that he treat…conservatives [less “clean on the slavery issue”] as enemies of the government. Said Lincoln: ‘It would simply be monstrous…to denounce men who had courageously upheld the Union…when that affiliation threatened not only their political futures but their very lives…Such vindictiveness is among the saddest features of the times…’”
Ms. Goodwin’s conclusion was that Lincoln’s ability to unite adversaries for the greater good as shown here was a secret to his success as president. As with his “Team of Rivals” cabinet, he would use whomever he could with talent & dedication to help him REBUILD what appeared to be a hopelessly divided country. Even Michael Jordan knew better than to let petty politics get in the way of his building an unlikely “supporting cast” & 6 world championships for the Chicago Bulls. But, then, maybe Mr. Biden wants to be more like AOC or No.45?
