Black Kids Need to Know Their Daddy?
“Biggest Root Cause of Crime Is Fatherlessness,” says Jason Riley as he cites new study showing 2-parent “children are likelier to finish HS & stay out of trouble.” Trouble is that fact was taught me 50 YRS AGO at UIC & on Chicago’s South Side.
Come on, now. How long is this liberal “Who’s Your Daddy” mantra going to be used as an excuse for this obvious repeat family failure in the inner cities? As the black WSJ columnist Riley recently argued, Ian Rowe of the American Enterprise Institute has written a book called “Agency” that has “attracted many admirers because of the simplicity of the three steps that young people, even if born into disadvantaged circumstances or raised by a young single parent, can themselves control & take in their lives.” Do read Rowe’s book for the details …
But, suffice it to say here that my experience working with such disadvantaged teens in Chicago’s Cabrini Green aka “Liberalism’s Hi-Rise From Hell” attests to the correctness of Rowe’s underlying premise. Including that such fatherless black kids can turn out to be great kids. Don’t get me wrong. Many if most of Chicago’s current gangbangers don’t know or want to know their fathers. But, my Moody Institute basketball team made up of a dozen fatherless blacks proved themselves on and off the court (they won an international “Word of Life” tournament with a 22-1 record) to be outstanding gentlemen … religious, reverent to adults as well as one another, respectful of their opponents & refs. Pure salt of the earth characters. Carefully ambitious. Usually positive, ready with a smile. Always giving of themselves with a kind of song in their hearts. Brave. Willing to risk bodily harm & chuck the harassment to join a gang. So impressive I was by these kids that I wished I could be more like them at their age. Wake up libs. Blacks don’t have to have a father or YOU & YOUR CONDESCENDING HANDOUTS to “Do the Right Thing” in life.
