Blue State Mandates Gone Wild & Population Migration

The WSJ’s “The Great Pandemic Migration” cites latest Census Bureau stats showing Blue States like Ca, Ill & NY are losing a huge number of folks to Red States like Tex & Fla & says it’s because of Covid mandates gone wild. Crime, climate & taxes also have skin in the game.

Argued the newspaper’s editorial board: “The pandemic has changed America in many ways, and one major change is the migration from states that locked down their economies and schools the most to those that kept them largely open.” They came to that conclusion from taking a closer look at the “underreported news in last week’s CB” estimates from July 1, 2020 to July 1, 2021. That data shows Illinois saw over 151K people left for other states; California had 429K folks migrate elsewhere and New York took a 406K outflow hit. Where did all the flowers go? Largely to Texas and Florida.

The WSJ did note that “migration from high- to low-tax states, especially in the Sun Belt, has been going on for well over a decade” but “the trend picked up during the pandemic, as Democratic states tended to impose the strictest lockdowns and school closures.” And, what about crime? Not that Texas & Florida aren’t also suffering from that plague, but haven’t LA, Chicago & New York have been described as virtual “Death Zones”?
