Bud Light Swallows Modelo Rise To Top
Once the King of Beer Sales, Bud Light slipped to No. 3 after dat boycott tabled it & “reshaped the beer industry.” No. 2 now happens to be Michelob Utlra, a barely better piss water owned by the same InBev & No. 1 remains Modelo.
Says the WSJ: “Bud Light’s star is still falling more than a year after a boycott turned the US beer industry upside down … Bud Light [now] represented 6.5% of beer dollar sales in US stores in the 4 weeks ended July 6 … The new rankings show the fallout from a Bud Light boycott that began in April 2023 when a transgender influencer posted an Instagram video about a personalized beer can that the brand had sent her [or him] as a gift. The following month Bud Light lost its spot as the top-selling beer in America & continued to be a target of the political right for much of the year.”
All that politics stuff to explain the Big Drain of Big B is probably all well & good. But, what neither the company let alone media seems to be able to grasp let alone swallow is that the product itself was not all that great to begin with; could it be its popularity was largely attributable to the relentless marketing behind it? And, once the PR façade had been stripped away by reality … was its demise so hard to see coming?
