Bully Or BS in NYC “Restorative Justice” Disciplinary Plan?

Several NYC parents said they’re pulling their kids out of school over escalating bully-ism & a progressive “restorative justice” program that they say foolishly empowers the bullies & humiliates the victims. A level or disheveled playing field?

“Children are being pepper-sprayed, children are literally being beaten over the head and being videotaped at the same time and the Department of Education does not have an answer for this,” parent Michael Duncan told Fox News. Mr. Duncan called out a middle school in particular as well as the entire school system for promoting the experimental mediation program rather than using traditional punitive methods to maintain discipline. The reform idea was to “urge offenders to accept responsibility and make restitution with victims of their own accord.” To implement it, the city’s DOE partnered with a group known as the Center for Court Innovation with an eye toward “mitigating discrepancies in school suspension rates based on race, gender & disability. How’s that working out?

The parents say violence has spiraled “out of control” in the NYC schools. As Mona David, a mother & member of the NYC School Safety Coalition noted, “Restorative justice enables the assailant and does not protect the victim. So, expecting students to sit down with someone and listen to why that other student feels the need to attack them … is unacceptable.” The DOE told the New York Post it would be putting more aides & social workers at the one middle school “hot spot” and none have yet been reported to have been tied up …
