Can AI Hurt Rather Than Help Students?

Now we learn AI can answer test Qs & write term papers for kids? One step forward, 2 steps back for educational system plagued by politics, woke pc, plummeting test scores & lack of “3 R” focus, instead of proper purpose?

One former teacher told Fox News the “new technology has hurt students … created more problems that it solves … and should be restricted in classrooms.” Peter Laffin, the founder of Crush the College Essay argued, “We introduce a lot of technology in the classrooms to correct problems that we see … [but] … often the cure is worse than the disease.” That, he says, can be particularly true of AI. Last week, Fox noted, tech company OpenAI unveiled an AI chatbot, ChatGPT, which has “stunned users with its advanced functions like generating school essays for any grade level, answering open-ended analytical questions and wirting jokes, poems and even computer code. The internet is swirling with predictions about the implications of this sophisticated technology.” But, Mr. Laffin, who is now a writing coach after teaching English for more than 10 yrs, warns of ChatGPT’s potential impact on educating kids.

“I personally think that we should be restricting all sorts of technological tools, and this one I think for a very particular reason,” explained Laffin. “We [should] want to make sure that we’re teaching kids, not just the subject but also [the right] values.”
