Catholic Marymount To Slay Socrates?

Catholic U considers trashing Humanities curriculum w/pop subjects aka woke BS? Wasn’t 15th Century Renaissance fueled by REDISCOVERING Greek & Roman intellectual titans not pandering to Dark Age, if "modern", Neanderthals?

And, yet we have the shocking Fox News report Marymount University, a Catholic learning institution, is seriously planning to “reinvent” itself to fend off declining enrollments, ya da, ya da. If things are that bad, maybe close up shop rather than close up minds by betraying the school’s “mission”? Exactly, what might be asked, is a “university” without such basic subjects as math, philosophy, lit, art & history, let alone theology, as students & staff now argue?

Perhaps this might be a time to step back from today’s culture wars to remind us of the true importance of the Humanities, as does historian Vincent Cronin, in his seminal “The Florentine Renaissance”: “The Florentines’ first reaction to [rediscovering the classics] was admiration & awe. Whatever field they turned to, from poetry to oratory, from mathematics to medicine, they found that the Greeks & Romans had surpassed them. Not only stylistically … but in substance also they were forced to conclude that their own immediate past had been an age of darkness & classical times an age of light … The result was an intense enthusiasm for the classical achievement. In every field from architecture to zoology, what the Greeks & Romans had done was exemplary … With classical boldness, they wanted to make something of it. And, so the classical ideal became for them a stimulus, a challenge, a model.” To Marymount’s brain trust, the Socratic Q might be asked: “Et tu, Brutus?”
