Climate Accord Discord Smokes Hopes

Saudis tell COP28 to kiss their oily butts on “fossil fuel phaseout” pipedream while realists urge John Kerry to stop kissing China’s & third world’s coal-driven hind ends. Will we ever learn how to just get along?

As the WSJ editorial board bluntly opined: “Give John Kerry Credit for persistence if not realism. President Biden’s climate envoy keeps demanding the end of fossil fuels while the world continues to blow through his apocalyptic warnings.” Case in point: “He attacks Chevron while China keeps building coal plants” & the rich nation mania for anti-coal “bribes to poor nations are going up in smoke.” As a result, the editors note, “a new report for the COP28 climate conference in Dubai says global emissions will hit a new peak this year.” Kerry “keeps berating American fossil fuels producers though US emissions are on track to fall 4% in 2023, [while] China’s emissions are set to rise by TWICE as much as the US decline.”

Meanwhile, we’re told the United Arab Emirates’ negotiators have “softened” the get tough on oil language (aka phase out fossil fuels sooner still) in a new agreement demanded by the staunchest anti-oil climate alarmists “to bring on board Saudi Arabia & other big fossil-fuel producing nations that were adamantly opposed to a phaseout.” Note, all of the 190+ governments must accept any such UN climate agreement for them to be approved. Good luck, UAE. Might be easier to get Hamas & Israel on the same page? THEN AGAIN, MORNING NEWS SAY ALL NIGHT TALKS RESULT IN ALL 190 COUNTRIES FOR FIRST TIME AGREEING TO AN EVENTUAL PHASE OUT TO SIGNAL ALL GOVS ARE COMMITTED TO SOME KIND OF UNIFIED ACTION.
