Compassionate Law Lacking In Japan, Russia?
It gets tiring to hear US progressives make other countries’ manure sound like compassionate shinola as Japan locks up Navy Lt in fatal car crash for 3 yrs & Russia sends WNBA’s pothead Griner to Siberian rock pile for 9. While the American legal system may not be flawless and too often is open to political influence, it’s the only one with a Bill of Rights, including a Due Process Clause, that gives prosecutors nightmares & defendants a fighting chance. Tell that to the whiners who keep talking about quitting the USA because of its “system”, but never do.
Exhibit A to demonstrate how uncompassionate other countries’ legal systems are in comparison: Somehow a US Naval officer was charged with criminally “negligent” driving his wife & 3 young kids up & down Mount Fuji, then, passing out from a sudden onslaught of “acute mountain sickness” caused by a dramatic shift in altitudes. Two pedestrians were tragically killed. But, the officer was not even conscious behind the wheel so how could he be “negligent”? No matter. Three years in the clink and be thankful it wasn’t more?
Then, there’s Exhibit B: While it might not be enough to rile up Moscow Honeymooner Bernie Sanders, Britney Griner was sentenced to 9 years in prison after admitting she brought some pot into Russia for medical reasons, then, begging for mercy, which she didn’t get. In both instances, lawyers & friends of the family suggest politics played and are continuing to play roles in the strange, seemingly over the top outcomes. S*** like this happens in America, too? Maybe. But, maybe not as easily & despite having a good lawyer on your side. Or, with so little compassion.
