COP26 Destined To Be 26th Climate Summit Cop Out?
The WSJ’s “The Climate Summit to Nowhere” aka COP26 doesn’t only mock latest such gathering for being needed after 25 ineffectual previous ones “but for its “awful timing” & STILL “unrealistic goals.”
The editors summed it up this way: The “World leaders converge[d] on Glasgow for a climate summit this weekend [but] don’t laugh … It’s incongruous bordering on the bizarre to organize a summit like this while Europe is battening down for a winter fuel crisis, President Biden is begging OPEC to produce more oil, China is firing up is coal-fueled power plants amid an electricity shortage, and climate-change plans wilt as soon as they’re exposed to the sunlight of democratic politics.”
Oh, but isn’t Communist China for the first time going to “promise” to reach ‘net zero” greenhouse gas emissions by “some future date”, perhaps 2050 or 2060? And, won’t the rest of the undeveloped world also “sign up” for more CO2 reductions, i.e., if the bribe from US & EU, er, inducement is sweet enough? The WSJ thinks “neither will amount to much.”
