Dads On Duty To Fight Rising School Violence?

It may sound old school, but La’s “Dads on Duty” coming to Va to tame out of control students takes on more cred after an alleged rape & faculty welcomed them. Escalating violence & offenders beware?

As the Fox News explained the backstory: “Jimmy & Josh Carter of Chesterfield County, Virginia, who have 7 children between them, said they were inspired by the ‘Dads on Duty’ initiative in Louisiana, where a group of fathers took matters into their own hands last fall after repeated violence broke out at Southwood High School in Shreveport, leading to the arrest of 23 students over just a 3-day period. When a teenager was arrested in March after allegedly dragging a female classmate into the bathroom at Thomas Dale High School in Chesterfield and raping her in February, the Carter brothers cemented their resolve to get involved.” Similar horror stories, of course, relating mounting violence in our schools as well as growing mental health & drug use issues, completes the picture.

With advice from the La fathers & implicit approval of the school authorities, the Carters have already recruited 30 volunteer dads to help an overwhelmed staff on the school’s expansive two campuses. The “win-win” arrangement, the Carters said, will be to have dads on duty to “greet the students in the morning, making sure they get to class throughout the day and ensuring a smooth dismissal.” But, the bottom line, he added, is to simply “make sure that every child feels safe and appreciated while they’re at school.”
