Despite Omicron “We’ll Be Home For New Years”
Bing Crosby’s “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” was another tear-jerking post-WWII smash hit with Americans but the Covid surge this holiday made flight delays on American, Delta (NOT the variant) & United bring tears to many travelers’ eyes…as WSJ notes “US airlines cancel more flights over holiday weekend…as infections hit pilots & flight attendants.” Pray all will be home for New Years?
Compounding the problem was that the rental car companies were also experiencing shortages of cars & overworked staffs thanks to the pandemic, so that getting in a rented car at the airport to drive to a regional destination was not always an alternative solution. In that sense, even Mary & Joseph were better off on their Road to Bethlehem if their flight from Nazareth had been delayed or cancelled.
The Fates as well as the airlines are doing their best, we’re told: “Airlines have rushed to reassign & reroute pilots & planes to cover the flying, in some cases offering additional pay to encourage healthy employees to pick up shifts over the Christmas holiday.” To Saint Christopher we say, “may everyone’s travels back home be safe, quick and without any further hitches.”
