Does NATO Love Trump After All?

You can always tell blarney when the hyperbole gets … hyperbolic. Case in point is Harris saying world leaders “laugh” at Trump. “Cringe in Fear” might have worked once. But, not even that does after No. 45 is praised by EU ministers for his “strong message.”

Of course, the WH’s ongoing bum rap is an offshoot of Trump’s publicly shaming NATO nations into contributing their promised share to the alliance’s defense budget. Ironically, it was the Biden-Harris Administration that benefited by Trump’s calling out as a number of NATO countries DID increase their contributions and the alliance earned back some of its self-respect. And now, with the wars in eastern Europe & Middle East escalating almost daily, Fox News reports that “foreign ministers [carefully] disagree with VP Harris that world leaders are ‘laughing’ at former President Trump, instead point to positives from the first Trump administration.”

Recall how Harris not only said EU folks “laugh” at Trump, but think he’s a “disgrace.” On the contrary, when the news outlet asked its ministers during a recent leadership enclave about Harris’ double-barreled statement, they insisted they “will work” with whomever wins in November. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky “praised Trump’s ‘strong’ message of defense spending, which he hoped Europe would continue to embrace in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine.” Lipavsky added, “The point is that Donald Trump had … one strong message for Europe & it was quite resonating & is resonating more now because he was [simply] saying spend more on your defense.” Lithuania’s FM Gabrielius Landsbergis echoed Lipavsky’s sentiments that increased defense spending by NATO nations pushed by Trump are a military as well as political reality today. And Hungarian FM Peter Szijjarto went so far as to say his government would have “huge expectations” for a new Trump Administration to help fend off the many major crises on the world stage.
