Dole, Biden Prescribe Compromise 4 Swamp Fever
The WSJ’s “Bob Dole & Joe Biden on Making Washington Work” did not quite work. Not that the “trust and spirit of compromise” they reportedly waxed about in the 97-year old Dole’s Watergate apartment this weekend wasn’t exactly what the country needs. And, now President Biden, a Democrat, & former Senator Dole, a Republican, certainly are prime examples of political opponents remaining friends over decades of service despite some bitter disagreements that COULD NOT be worked out.
But, the two men with 175 years total behind them seem to have left out the other ingredient to a true leader’s secret sauce, that being, “courage” to buck his own party that’s balking at the prescribed compromise. Oh, Mr. Dole & Mr. Biden did talk about how great it was in their Senate days to have colleagues who had not only the “trust”, but the “courage” to back their leaders who had cut this or that deal for the good of the country. “They just need to do some of that today,” Mr. Dole assured, while you could almost see the eyes of Mitch McConnell and Chuck Schumer roll in their heads & mutter “try to tell that to the Tea Party or Squad.”
God bless Mr. Dole in his next battle to fight lung cancer. May we suggest, however, that the “courage” of which he speaks in today’s political arena may have to come from the top down rather than the bottom up? President Obama who also visited Mr. Dole never learned that lesson. Will President Biden?
