Equity’s Never Crack A Book Brainstorm
Having long ago ditched teaching the “3 Rs” in favor of woke education ideologies that try to rewrite history the wrong way, we’re told “Schools Are Ditching Homework, Deadlines in Favor of ‘Equitable Grading’”…
As the WSJ coverage suggests, the latest “equity” initiative “aims to measure mastery & account for hardships at home” yet “teachers say some students game the system.” As one Las Vegas high school teacher noted, she at first thought the new grading directive made sense since, under the changes, “students are given more chances to prove they have mastered a subject without being held to arbitrary deadlines." The idea, of course, was to recognize challenges some of the children have outside school. However, soon after the system was started, the teacher said her 11th-grade honors students realized the new rules “minimized the importance of homework to their final grade, leading many to forgo the brainstorming & rough drafts required ahead of writing a persuasive essay. Some didn’t trun in the essay at all, knowing they could redo it later.” She concluded: “They’re relying on children having intrinsic motivation and that is the furthest thing from the truth for this age group.”
Now, if THAT was the reaction “honors” students had, imagine what the average “I never crack a book” kid will do with the added incentive to never crack a book?
