EV’s Battery Sticker Shock
One little understood if dirty secret of EVs is the potential cost of repairs & replacement parts, at least, as one Florida family found that a “new” battery for it's used EV can cost more than vehicle itself…
As Fox News related: “Avery Siwinski is a 17-yr-old who’s parents spent $11,000 on a used Ford Focus Electric car” for her with 60K miles on it. Avery “loved” the machine for the first 6 months … “it was small & quiet & cute” … but then the dashboard started flashing ominous symbols. “All of a sudden,” Avery recalled to ABC’s KVUE, “it stopped working.” No problemo, you say? Just get a new Die Hard for the kid? But, Bunky, the Ford dealership said the new battery for the electric car “only” costs $14,000. It gets worse. Avery’s dad passed away from colon cancer. And, even tho granddad stepped in to help pay for a replacement battery, Ford then said no battery was available for the “discontinued” model.
Buyers of NEW Cars also Beware: According to Recurrentauto, replacement batteries today can also cost up to $20,000 if the new car warranty has expired or doesn’t completely cover that particular cost. Of course, over time, Recurrentauto says, EV batteries are “projected” to cost less. For instance, by 2025, “only” $5,600. No, don’t laugh with Buttigieg on this …
