EV Tesla Can Shake, Rattle & Burn
We're told an EV Tesla can "smoke" in more ways than one. As in "California man's Tesla catches fire while driving on highway." Give me a fuel efficient Mazda Miata any day. It's more fun to drive & never bursts into flames while doing so.
According to the Fox News story, a "video of the incident shows emergency responders waiting for the flames to burn down before they can access the over heated battery" that caused the conflagration. It must have been a long wait. In earlier WSJ coverage & as noted in this blog, fire fighters around the country have warned that EV battery fires are "near impossible" to put out since the lithium-ion cells inside burns so hot it is arguably [if with exageration] akin to a nuclear reactor's meltdown. As Fox reported, this local fire department (as most now do) let the inferno burn out so water and/or foam can be applied directly on the battery for any kind of chance to extinguish it ... what the Fox story doesn't relate is that the dang EV batteries have been known to reignite hours later.
Fortunately, a near tragedy was averted in this case: "Bishal Malla was headed onto Highway 99 near Cosines River Old [to pick up his family] when he felt his Tesla begin to shake ... After pulling over & getting out of the car, Malla immediately spotted smoke billowing from underneath the vehicle. He quickly called 911. [I'll bet.] Soon, the smoke gave way to flames and the car was set ablaze." Moral of the story? If you feel your EV shake, rattle ... roll the hell out of it as fast as you can.
