Exploding EVs Can’t Replace A-Bomb - Yet
“Burn, baby, burn” isn’t just a radical 60’s slogan but today’s reality for firefighters across the USA trying to deal with EV battery fires that burn hotter than hell & last longer than ones fueling the Ever Ready Bunny.
That pretty much summarizes the WSJ story also saying it all in its title, “Best Way to Extinguish a Flaming Electric Vehicle? Let It Burn.” It’s no joke. “We’re told bluntly enough in the story itself that “firefighters called to extinguish an electric-vehicle fire are discovering the surest approach is to stand back & watch it burn.” Yet, truth is, that truth was known at least two years ago as media reports began to surface about the EV industry’s giving new meaning to “the devil is in the details.” Firefighters & researchers are shaking the business pub’s memory of its own earlier stories on the subject, telling the latest reporter to cover the phenomenon that “electric cars combust differently than their gas-powered counterparts.” You think? Not only do EV fires last longer & burn hotter, but, ahem, “have a tendency to reignite.”
Case in point: “First responders in Franklin, Tenn., faced their first burning EV … a Nissan Leaf that ignited while charging outside the car maker’s North /America headquarters. They spent hours pouring 45,000 gallons of water on the car, compared with 500 to 1,000 gallons that fires involving gasoline-powered vehicles. “I think if we were faced with a similar scenario next time, we might need to let it burn,” said Fire Marshal Andy King. And, might we add, he might bring along the burgers & dogs to cook while the show lasts well into the night.
