FBI/DOJ Gaetz Blitzed On Catholic Canard
WSJ blitzed DOJ in “The FBI’s Catholic Canard” for its targeting “radical-traditionalist” believers, but more concrete evidence of the agency’s political “weaponization” may be seen in belatedly dropped Gaetz probe.
It may be recalled federal prosecutors had recommended in September that no charges be filed against the GOP congressman from Florida based on vague allegations of his being caught up in a sex trafficking scandal. Still, it wasn’t until after a mid-term election that the re-elected (anyway) Republican, a vocal critic of the Biden Administration, was spared further angst over what turns out to be an overly long investigation triggered by a NY Times report published a year ago based on unnamed sources. While maintaining his innocence all along, Gaetz admitted to having worked with the FBI in trying to nab those trying to “extort” him at the time, including a “former DOJ official seeking $25 million while smearing my name.” In the end, Gaetz's perpetrator was indicted & pleaded guilty as alleged. As Fox anchor Tucker Carlson said, it’s a “pretty weird” affair & hard to swallow. Then, again, this is the DC Swamp. The point is, the bureaucracy was never intended (legally) to be in the business of targeting (or appearing to have targeted) Gaetz or anyone else for their political affiliations or views. Yet, the strangely slow to react DOJ here didn’t seem to Gaetz the memo.
As the WSJ editors emphasize in the unrelated case of some DOJ folks seeming to have now targeted Catholics for their anti-abortion & lgbt beliefs, “we doubt FBI leadership is pursuing a political agenda.” Yet, “the bureau clearly has major issues with partisan operatives & quality control in its ranks. If [FBI Director] Wray wants to re-establish trust in the wake of the FBI’s recent string of scandals, he will have to do more to clean house.”
