Gen Z Workers Quiet Quitters Or Slackers?
We’re told Gene Z workers are “quiet quitting” their jobs because there are more important things in life than making money for the Man (while making money for themselves). In Olden Days they were called “Slackers.”
As the WSJ’s “Managing Your Careers” column noted, “Some Gen Z professionals are saying no to hustle culture” and “I’m not going to go extra.” It’s also supposedly about “not taking your job too seriously. The phrase is apparently generating “millions” of views on TikTok as “some young professionals reject the idea of going above beyond” the call of duty or whatever in their careers, labeling their lesser enthusiasm a form of “quitting”, only nobly so.
First: These TikTok addicts are not “professionals.” And, there’s nothing “new” about their crappy attitudes. In my long career as a lawyer, editor and journalist as well as media relations manager, I saw many a hypocritical slacker rip off their employers under the guise of “righteous indignation.”
