Gloves Off. Trump, McConnell Show Cards, Burn Bridges
So, it didn’t take long. The 2022 gloves are off, if they ever were atop, Trump’s brass knuckles & McConnell’s baby soft hands. Fox News called No. 45’s response to McConnell’s recent criticism a “broadside”, but that’s an understatement.
Mr. Trump’s statement read in part: “Mitch is a dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack, and if Republican Senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again…Where necessary and appropriate, I will back primary rivals who espouse Making America Great Again and our policy of America First.” McConnell, you’ll recall, earlier had issued his own broadside aimed at Trump in the WSJ: “Jan. 6 was a shameful day…There is no question former President Trump bears moral responsibility…His behavior during and after the chaos was also unconscionable.”
Hey, guys, why not say what you really feel? What more can be said? The dancing has stopped, the usual chalked choreographed lines have been unmistakably obliterated. Could this be politics at its best & worst? The Dems & Beltway pundits are eating this party schism up. But, maybe it’s time the behind the scenes feelings of these two had been publicly aired out so the GOP voters will be better prepared to call the winner 22 months from now…THEIR way. One suspects the political combatants knew THIS putting all cards on the table was coming…and thought the bridge burning they suggest was necessary, if not inevitable.
