GM Robotaxis Cruise In Crash City
Are GM’s self-driving robotaxis proving to be another example of driving progressive policies too fast into oncoming traffic? Its CEO is out after driverless shuttle crashes in Austin but after Cruise employees warned of rollout problems; losses piling up too.
As the WSJ coverage noted, “The crash was one of several alarming mishaps involving GM’s ballyhooed self-driving car division that have raised questions about whether the vehicles are safe enough to carry passengers or be near human drivers and pedestrians.” Shortly after the Austin incident, Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt resigned as chief exec, then, his co-founder, Dan Kan, quit too. And, oh, not too long before that nightmare scenario, the company lost its permits in California & had to pause its operations.
Not that the driverless failures are owned by GM alone. As the WSJ pointed out, news reports about “misbehaving driverless vehicles” offered by other companies have appeared too. Still, it all points to “tempered expectations that the [driverless] movement was on the cusp of transforming human transportation.” In GM’s case, it’s on a “pace to lose more than $2 billion” on Cruise this year alone. More wishful thinking by the Green Money Eating Monsters who have been making roadkill out of their taxpayer subsidized toys?
