Had Covid? Think (Again) If You’re Immortal
So even the two “Joes” (Biden & Manchin) got Covid as medical experts assert “most people have been infected with the virus, even if some don’t realize it.” What were we told about “herd” immunity from pandemic’s get go?
Yet, the herd mantra debated but not well understood in the Trump Era still isn't; nor is the subject any simpler now. In the WSJ’s “Think You’ve Never Had Covid-19? Think Again,” geneticists and immunologists are still studying “factors that might protect people from infection and learning why some are predisposed to more severe” Covid experiences. And, they’re finding the reasons why some get sick while others don’t are not only many, but far from being fully understood.
Of course, vaccinations have helped, but not always, as seen in the twice inoculated President. Meanwhile, even if a person’s had Covid (whether they know it or not) they apparently don’t always make antibodies or, at least, enough that can be detected by testing for them. Further complicating the search for answers is the fact that no two tests in use are alike while most cannot “distinguish antibodies from infection versus those generated by vaccination.” Peoples’ relative health and especially by way of their immune systems also represent a piece of the puzzle. So might “genetic markers” affect one’s predisposition to contracting Covid. And, on and on. Latest bottom line advice for now: “There are plenty of people who’ve had the vaccines or even had Covid and then have gotten Covid again,” said Dr. Steve Jameson, also at the University of Minnesota Medical School. “It’s not as if it makes you immortal.”
