Hollywood Superhero Fetish Forever?

We’re told the summer movie season fizzled out and there’s few blockbusters for the industry to bank on this Fall. Well, if you keep producing mostly “Superhero” crap, even teens in need of a fun date night will puke.

As the WSJ’s Business Section observed, “Box-office receipts fell short of pre-pandemic seasons by about 20% despite early hits like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World Dominion.” So, why exactly did the summer “start with a bang, but end in a whimper” as there were no hit movies in the can, so to speak, when the Labor Day holiday came and went?

Like Joe, Hollywood is blaming its sales woes on a “hangover caused by the pandemic”. Sounds like a hit movie blast from the past and, in fact, the industry seems to be counting on the Superhero fad to get butts back in their seats in the coming months. Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Entertainment superhero franchise has “Black Adam” scheduled for October. And, Disney is teeing up Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Strange World,” and 20th Century Studios’ “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Wretch.
