Insta-Pedophile Need’s Zuck’s Attention?

Now we’re told that Meta’s “Instagram Connects Vast Pedophile Network” & all Zuck’s company can say about the unit’s guiding users to “child-sex content” is it’s trying its darndest to improve internal controls. Maybe try harder?

The joint investigation by WSJ, Standford & U Mass Amherst is stunning. The paper’s coverage notes: “Pedophiles have long used the internet, but unlike the forums & file-transfer services that cater to people who have interest in illicit content, Instagram doesn’t merely host these activities. Its algorithms promote them. Instagram connects pedophiles & guides them to content sellers via recommendation systems that excel at linking those who share niche interests.”

Meta acknowledged “problems within its enforcement operations” and said it has set up an internal task force to address the issues raised by the investigators. Great. It says it has also taken down 27 pedophile networks in the past two years and is planning more removals. Wonderful. Observed the WSJ: Since receiving the Journal queries, the platform said it has blocked thousands of hashtags that sexualize children, some with millions of posts, and restricted its systems from recommending users search for terms known to be associated with sex abuse.” Grand. Yet. Is that all they got? Maybe a very expensive to defend lawsuit might light a bigger fire & sense of urgency under Meta’s CEO.
