Jesus Inspires Hollywood & All of Us

We’re told religious movies are sweeping Hollywood as “rich investors pour in millions.” And, the new ‘God’s Not Dead’ film set to even inspire Christians to make their voices heard at the ballot box. But, is it just about money or votes or yearning for truth?

While Fox & WSJ talked greed & the latter uses the upcoming “House of David” as “one of several new projects created by Christian filmmakers who say they were inspired by hits like ‘Game of Thrones’  & ‘Harry Potter,’” wasn’t the news outlets missing the real point? That much of the movie-going public is desperate for uplifting (not just religious) fare instead of the never-ending stream of violence & narcissism they’ve been fed for years now? The thought came to me the other day in watching “Reagan.” It was predictably marketed as another “love story” but I could have sworn the script was more in the vein of “Knute Rockne All American,” even though Reagan’s iconic role as the “Gipper” wasn’t mentioned once.

Enter “The Chosen” & its “surprise” hit status that kept growing as it completed its 4rth season. The scripts of each episode faithfully follow even the most controversial sermons by Christ (portrayed by a thought-provoking Jonathan Roumie) & somehow without take it or leave it preaching. And, in doing so, the stories portray the deep struggles His followers are said to have had & Jesus’s own human side struggling with their struggles, not to mention pre-conceiving His own impending brutal death on the Cross. These were struggles of real people who dealt with the love, hate, failure & successes of their day … just like we are trying to do. The stories are uplifting for the very reason they still give us hope that all can turn out ok in the end for us too. Only a devilish media could co-opt if not distort that historical TRUTH.
