Joe South Sider Goes Home To Sweet Home Chicago
Going back to Sweet Home Chicago for a son’s graduation from a suburban Fire Academy & am of course proud of him; as I also appreciate the grit & guts of all first responders who protect & serve in & about the City of Broad Shoulders sometimes referred to as Murder Inc.
As it happens, Fox News reports that last weekend alone a Chicago Police sergeant was the 13th officer to be shot or shot at so far in 2021 after 79 officers were shot during 2020. Some how, some way, Chicago still manages to be one of the most beautiful & fun cities in the world: Surrounded by forest preserves, boasting a 10 mile lakefront dedicated to beaches, parks, harbors, bike trails, golf courses & museums; pro sports galore; world famous symphony & opera; an Impressionist collection Parisians would die for; Second City Improv; best performing arts theaters this side of NY; Chicago Style Pizza & 5 Star ethnic restaurants.
A one-time South Sider now swimming in DC’s corrupt Swamp, I admit to getting a little misty recalling how Joe South must have felt when he crafted the words to his hit song that recalls his own “childhood days.” No matter how bad or good things may be now: “Don’t it make you wanna go home now…Don’t it make you want to go home…All of God’s children get weary when they roam…Don’t it make you wanna go home…”
