John Kass Knows Angels Are Real & Just Heard One

HOF Tribune columnist John Kass doesn’t doubt he had just heard an angel on the radio as she assured listeners she hopes her dad’s killer “finds Jesus.” The young woman’s Christ-like message made the man who replaced crusty Mike Royko’s articles for more than 20 years break down while driving. Might we all?

Known for his own biting satire of Chicago politics, Kass began by saying “I consider myself a rational man. But I do believe in angels. They don’t appear by chance. They present themselves just when we need them. They’ve been sent. If we haven’t shut ourselves down in our hardened shells, if we’re receptive, we just might be able to hear them. I heard one such angel on the radio … on Dan Proft’s show [hosted by another hard-hitting journalist]. She’s 18 years old. She lives in Texas. Her name is Shelby Houston. She was delivering the eulogy for her father at his funeral,” a 21-yr veteran of the Mesquite Texas Police Dept. He had been shot to death while responding to an argument in a parking lot between a husband, his girlfriend and his wife. “They began fighting and the husband allegedly shot” Mr. Houston before turning the gun on himself. Then came Shelby’s angelic message. Shelby acknowledged, she’d seen other police families’ lives similarly crushed by such tragedy. Yet, she concluded with the stunner: “But I can’t get any part of my heart to hate him. All that I can find is myself hoping & praying for this man to truly know Jesus.” Admitted Kass: “I had to pull over to the side of the road … listening to the sound of my own breathing.”

Kass concluded as he had begun: “Are there angels? You may not think so. Years ago, I would have agreed with you. But I know they exist. It’s not magic or sorcery. They speak to us in different ways ... They invite us to listen. And if only we could scrape away that hard bark that we’ve grown around our hearts, more of us might be able to hear them.”
