Long Live Hope & God in “Jesus Revolution”

God’s NOT dead, at least, to today’s youth searching for meaning & flocking to the surprise hit movie “Jesus Revolution” based on then-teen hippie Greg Laurie’s help in launching a late-60's spiritual revival of epic proportions … despite the period's growing cultural chaos.

Maybe the Fox News coverage is a bit over-stated in saying the Indie film is “shaking up Hollywood.” Yet, considering the $51 million box office (and counting) success of this movie, maybe not, as Laurie, now Harvest Christian Fellowship’s Pastor, explains why “it is resonating with so many people”. It has, he says, something to do with “hope … at a time in American history when it appeared [as it does today] that culture was collapsing & people were turning away from religion … Many thought it was perhaps the demise of our country. People were talking about a sexual revolution, they were talking about a political revolution – and God sent a Jesus Revolution.”

No need to recount the plot set in Southern California here or otherwise unwittingly serve as a spoiler. In remembering that late 60’s & early 70’s angst, however, Laurie pointed to TIME’s two “historic” cover stories about how “bleak” things seemed and “what happens when a spiritual awakening occurs” among the youth he & his fellow “Jesus Freaks” encountered on their Road Less Travelled instead. He told Fox he believes the Christian church has an opportunity “right now” to bring similar hope to today’s searching kids & challenged culture. “Our job is to bring hope,” he said. Our job is to bring help. Our job is to bring people to the Lord. That’s what I do. I’m an Evangelist.”
