Meta’s World A Mega Flop?
Q has to be asked if Mark Zuckerberg & his Meta flagship gamble in metaverse was a Mega flop & virtual disaster in the making as its subscriptions fall badly short of hype …
As WSJ’s Tech page notes, “Most visitors to Horizon Worlds generally don’t return after first month” prompting one observer to wisecrack, “An empty world is a sad world.” Indeed, a year after Mr. Zuckerberg boldly went where no man had gone before by rebranding Facebook as Meta Platforms & thereby betting the farm on the so-called metaverse, “internal documents show the transition grappling with glitchy technology, uninterested users and a lack of clarity about what it will take to succeed.” According to those docs, Meta initially set a goal of reaching 500K monthly active users for Horizon Worlds by the end of this year, “but in recent weeks revise that figure to 280K [and] the current total is 200K.”
Alarmingly, the story goes, “most visitors to Horizon generally don’t return to the app after the first month.” As Mr. Zuckerberg has maintained from the get go, his Meta Platforms was “going to take time” to get customers enamored with its head in the clouds product. But, he’s apparently going to have to get his product’s head out of its netherworld if it’s going succeed in changing the real world as envisioned.
