Mighty Casey Pinch Hits Doody 4 Trump?
In light of No. 46’s expected 2024 presidential campaign announcement, WSJ’s Henninger calls out “The Trump Liability for the GOP” BUT also calls attention to Republicans’ overwhelmingly stronger “candidate pool” than Dems …
The columnist cuts to the chase in concluding that “If Donald Trump announces next week he’s running for president again, the 2024 election ends that day,” at least, if an equally unpopular octogenarian Joe Biden also insists on a rematch. Something about Mr. Trump’s string of electoral defeats ever since he nosed out an even more unpopular Hillary Clinton in 2016 & failure to build out his 30% base, esp among suburban independents.
Not to worry, Henninger quickly asserts, just “compare the Republican presidential bench if Mr. Trump steps aside with the Democrats’ bench …” He cites the GOP governors’ big wins on Tuesday: DeSantis, Abbott, Sununu & newcomer Kim Reynolds. Also think landslide senators Rubio and Scott. “The list goes on,” Henninger added, “Nikki Haley, Mike Pompeo, Mike Pence, Glenn Youngkin, Doug Ducey … all would be strong candidates.” What do the Dems have to offer? Harris, Coons, Warner, Sinema, Raimondo, even Manchin. Ironically, he says, “each would defeat Mr. Trump” but not Howdy Doody. Yet, of course, some people are gluttons for punishment. How else explain the mid-term outcomes?
