More Crime Begets More Gun Owners?
The more crime the more people who don’t even like guns buy one for self-defense? In Deep Blue Massachusetts that appears to be the case as more minorities & little old ladies head for the shooting range.
At least, that’s the take Fox News took on a WBUR (NPR) Boston report showing Massachusetts hit record gun sales beginning in 2020. It suggests gun use is underreported as gun dealers in the state sold nearly 276,000 from 2020 thru 2021, “with the majority of sales being handguns, at 64%, while 23% of the sales were for rifles. BTW, 2020 Rand Corps stats say Massachusetts (along with New Jersey) has (or had) the lowest gun ownership rate in the country heading into 2021, at 14.7%. “We tripled sales in 2020 from 2019,” one gun shop owner told WBUR, adding that 2020 & 2021 were “landmark years.” Nationwide, Fox notes, “violent crime spiked across the country in 2020 with FBI reporting a nearly 30% increase in murders compared to 2019.” At the same time, gun sales across the nation “skyrocketed” with an “estimated 23 million firearms sold & more than 21 million gun background checks conducted, thereby, “smashing records.”
The national as well as local surge in gun sales appears also to have been partially driven by first-time gun owners, including women & minorities. The Mass gun shop owner noted how those more vulnerable groups are more frequently visiting his shop and that “even his middle school lunch lady” paid him a visit recently. “I call them these roving bands of ladies that come in together and they want to shoot” for practice and safety lessons.
