MSM’s Cred Crumbles From Crud It Bakes
Experts worry there’s no quick fix to MSM’s credibility crisis as trust in it crumbles after yrs of disregarding fairness & objectivity, yet concede it costs nothing to tell folks truth about events not how to think about them.
According to the most recent Gallup poll, only 16% of Americans say they have real confidence in newspapers, down 5% from the 2021 numbers & lowest mark since Gallup starting asking about newspapers 50 years ago. Meanwhile, television news got only an 11% thumbs up, also 5% down from last year. Journalist Glenn Greenwald told Fox News he believes the public’s confidence in the MSM has nose-dived so much the percentage of Americans who actually trust the press would be “zero” if it were not for Democrats, presumably because they tend to get more favorable coverage than Republicans or Independents. According to Gallup, only 5% of Republicans have confidence in newspapers compared to 35% of Democrats. When it comes to TV news, 8% of Republicans expressed confidence while 20% of Democrats did.
“Everyone knows what side they’re on,” Greenwald opined. But, isn’t what’s wanted by average folks is for the MSM to simply be on the side of truth without the editorializing? “They can improve the situation by not injecting so much opinion into what should be straight reporting,” agreed Fox media analyst Joe Concha. “And, also by not automatically & blatantly taking a side on big issues …” Not asking too much, is it? But, after so many years of getting away with its biases, Concha conceded, “it’s a hard bell to unring.”
