New Sports App Smells Like Bull[s] S***?
Desperate to milk every last penny out of us, 3 MSM behemoths…Fox, Disney & Warner…colluded to bundle channels sometimes featuring sports. The “new sports app won’t last long & will pay off only if it helps old Hollywood stem mega streaming losses.”
At least, so says a pessimistic WSJ columnist Holman Jenkins: “Call [the gambit] a dog’s breakfast of a cable bundle, including the all-sports channel ESPN, plus your local Fox & ABC affiliates, which sometimes show a ballgame or racing event when they aren’t showing local news, soaps or ‘The Simpson.’ Included too: the cable mainstays TBS & TNT with their holiday ‘Star Wars’ marathons & ‘Big Bang Theory’ reruns, though each also occasionally shows a baseball, basketball or Nascar event.” Can you stand missing out on a single Chicago Bulls game, i.e, if you live in LA?
So, tell us what you really think, Holman. And, he does: “In other words, a bunch of victims of cable’s decline [are] trying to get paid for their expensive [and ever growing] sports contracts.” But, agreed. “A gimmicky cable replacement app, it won’t solve the real problem for sports fans: How to get the contests they want. [Nor will it] solve the problem faced by the sports leagues: How to package their content for optimal fan viewing & revenue.”
