New York Homeowners’s Get Snowed By Kids & Pols

The WSJ article noted that snow shoveling during the Covid pandemic is one of the hottest “new” jobs to be had by enterprising youths & even others. A veritable windfall, we’re told.

If memory serves this Boomer, it wasn’t always like that. Recall Home Alone 3 in 1997. It’s young Alex Pruitt had the chicken pox so bad he was scratching his butt while trying to get paid for shoveling grumpy Mrs. Hess’s driveway. His reward? He got a remote controlled toy car instead of cash. According to today’s newspaper, however, “Too much snow plus few teens equals a spike in fees.” Clearly, the flurry of demand is exceeding an evaporating supply. By how much, you ask? And, who is cashing in?

As so often in media, finances & politics, can the New York area serve as a bellwether here too? “The average price for snow removal [in the NYC area] hit $150 for a townhouse in the city…and…$190 for a standard suburban home,” at least, according to Shovler, an app that matches the snow-challenged with snow solvers. Supposedly, tips averaged $25 & hit the $99 mark in some cases. Now that’s what you call a snow job. And, it can't be only kids cashing in. But, what the heck, homeowners in New York are used to being snowed by Cuomo & de Blasio.
