Nicotine Cig Ban An Overdue No-Brainer?
Having lost my Mom & her sibs to lung cancer I have little patience with opposition to “new” study showing nicotine-free cigs would sharply cut smoking addictions & supports Biden’s nicotine plan to ban the drug …
The WSJ tells us “15 years ago a group of scientists, government officials & tobacco control veterans met to discuss a hypothesis: Could reducing nicotine in cigarettes break smokers’ addiction?” Huh? That’s almost like asking 50 years ago if smoking itself caused lung cancer. Of course, there’s a correlation, one that everyone knew LONG ago, but the tobacco lobbyists have fought tooth and nail in Congress while so many others profiting financially from the industry’s nicotine-laced products buried their head in the sand.
So, the Biden Administration is expected to announce yet another idealistic “policy” as early as Tuesday, one that the FDA would “require the elimination of nearly all nicotine from cigarettes sold in the U.S.” U of Minnesota co-researcher on the study, Prof. Dorothy Hatsukami, said “This would be really historic … You can actually change smoking behavior.” Too bad the revelation came too late for so many, including my mom who smoked 3 packs a day & died a terrible death as the lung disease spread to her brain so bad it was inoperable. As also expected, the “tobacco industry questions [the study’s] findings” and stands to lose a ton of cigarette sales. Here we go with yet another round of endless litigation over the study & FDA action?
