No Garlands for Merrickless AG
WSJ suggests AG Merrick Garland reached the height of unmitigated gall when he gave his “Norms of Justice” speech, esp after becoming first to prosecute a president & Sup Crt had to remind him of Constitution’s “Immunity” clause.
Somehow, the editors quizzically mused, “Did he [Garland] think his Trump prosecutions wouldn’t get a furious response?” And, there the AG was, recently telling his DOJ employees how “our norms [have been] a promise that we will not allow this department to be used as a political weapon.” He went on to denounce “an escalation of attacks on the Justice Department’s career lawyers, agents and other personnel.” Undoubtedly, most DOJ employees believe it’s heinous to “weaponize” their power … and are, indeed, being cast as one lump sum of weaponeers, BUT they can thank Garland and boss Joe Biden for that.
The editors went back over the “timeline of events” that suggest Garland & Biden were less than the epitome of “Blind Justice.” The disgraceful Jan. 6 riot resulted in scores of charges filed against the storm troops “ferociously pursued [by DOJ but not] President Trump.” It wasn’t until April 2022, that the NY Times reported Biden believed Trump “was a threat to democracy & should be prosecuted.” Seven months later, Trump announced his presidential campaign & “only days later, Garland appointed bulldog prosecutor Jack Smith as special counsel” who would soon indict the former president. Only a fool could not connect the dots, the WSJ suggested, And, it’s asking too much to NOT ask why Trump became the first president in history to be so legally attacked by Justice … as the Supreme Court eventually did & chastisingly overruled much, if not all, of Smith’s case. In the end, the editors concluded, “Garland can lecture about ‘norms’ all he wants, but he is the man who under political pressure broke a norm that had lasted for more than 200 years.”
