NYC’s Whites Moving In As Blacks Bailing Out?

Fox Business reported New York City’s “white residents saw their ranks recently climb by 8.4% while black residents saw an 8.7% decline.” How does that work?

Fox called it a “tale of two Brooklyns.” The short of it is, white folks are jumping into the elite areas that keep getting built up, while black folks are jumping out of the poor areas that keep getting torn down. We’d like to think many of those exiting blacks are doing so because they have been moving up in the world and can afford it. Indeed, says John Mollenkopf, director of Urban Research at CUNY’s Graduate Center, “there’s been an upward trend in incomes & professional standing & education & they’re suburbanizing just like the white ethnics in the generation before them.”

But, that may be only half right. Mollenkopf adds that many older, retiring blacks are selling their NY homes at big profits & returning to the cheaper cost of living South. Meanwhile, Generra Garris, 26, told the NY Post some of her neighbors have left the projects for “better life” BUT it’s often because of the “bad environment” they are leaving behind. Let’s guess: Lousy public housing, violent crime, drug trafficking? The pattern is heard in other cities. As Garris said: “Who can blame” the blacks for wanting out?
