Omicron Less Severe, Pfizer Pill Approved As Cases Rise
Good Covid news can come in batches despite bad news the disease is spreading more rapidly than ever: WSJ says two studies show MUCH lower risk of hospitalization with the newly “dominant” Omicron variant AND Pfizer’s Covid-19 pill is now the first FDA approved drug newly infected can take at home to stay out of the hospital.
The positive new data on Omicron comes out of Scotland and South Africa “promising signs that immunity as a result of vaccination or prior infection remains effective at warding off severe illness with the fast-spreading strain.” Of course, one key to policy makers is “whether higher transmissibility outweighs reduced disease severity” and reinstituting lockdown measures that helped trigger what many medical experts have described as a “mental health crisis.” One vote here is to “pause” the draconian tendencies of the progressives in charge of most of our biggest cities pending any contrary data suggesting Omicron is more you know what.
Meanwhile, Fox reports that Pfizer’s antiviral Paxlovid will start being shipped to medical providers in January, but it may be weeks before broad availability is achieved. And, the pills effectiveness is still being tested to confirm the early “suspicions” it works. Yet, as the FDA’s Patrizia Cavazzoni noted, her agency’s authorization “provides a new tool to combat Covid-19 at a crucial time in the pandemic as new variants emerge.” Translated: The Delta & Omicron variants may not be the last we see …
