Oops. NY’s US Atty Sassoon Poops In Public
WSJ scorched Team Trump for “rotten” handling, of “top” NY fed prosecutors who objected to “deal” with Mayor to temporarily drop law fare charges for immigration cooperation. But, what “top” lawyer lets their anti-Trump policy views get aired publicly?
Notably, the paper’s editorial board mimicked the usual liberal mantra that Trump appointed interim head of the AG’s NY office, Deborah Sassoon, is “a member of the Federalist Society & clerked for two conservative pillars of the judiciary…” Ditto similar praise for a half-dozen of her colleagues who also resigned over the display of disunity. We get it. Everyone in the NY office is a great lawyer & most have Ivy League resumes. They are used to operating, the editors have conceded in the past, as a near semi-autonomous prosecutor’s office.
And there is the rub. While they, like all regional US Attorneys, have been given substantial “prosecutorial discretion,” they are not the president, nor independent of the executive branch leadership, let alone the US Attorney General, in this case, Pamela Bondi. They were plainly & publicly ORDERED by her acting deputy (Emil Bove) to dismiss the “politically motivated” corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams “without prejudice” (meaning they could be refiled at any time) in return for his sanctuary city’s cooperation in hunting down known criminals, including drug & human traffickers, in the country illegally. Sassoon refused to do as ordered & sent what some may call a condescending letter to AG Bondi asking for a meeting to “explain” why she, Bove & Trump were in the wrong on legal & policy grounds. Ok so far, even tho a Dodo Bird could see from the daily news what the response was going to be. BUT, predictably that letter (and a similar one by a resigning colleague) got publicized via the MSM & social media. So did a blistering reply from Bove. Oops. How the letter(s) got publicized, doesn’t matter. Any wanna-be “top” US Atty can’t poop like that in public & keep their “reputation” as WSJ suggests she could/should have.
