Parents Criminally Liable in Michigan School Murders?

Are manslaughter charges against dim-witted parents of a Michigan teen murder suspect another Rittenhouse rush to judgment or finally a recognition parents in the know bear some responsibility for kids’ heinous acts?

Let’s hope this prosecutor, surely under pressure to charge the parents of Ethan Crumbley accused of murdering 4 students, has enough evidence to justify the charges announced at a presser, while not knowing their whereabouts (although they were later found "hiding in a Detroit art studio" after a state-wide manhunt). Their lawyer who was supposedly arranging for their “surrender” suggested his clients were just fleeing for their own "safety." Yet, as Oakland County DA, Karen McDonald, said the parent’s interactions with their 15-year-old son “pieced together by investigators in the days leading up to the shooting” made the parents criminally liable. The parents bought the weapon with the son on Black Friday & Ms. Crumbley posted on social media she & son “tested out his Christmas present” that was apparently stored in an unlocked drawer in the parents’ bedroom; two days before the shooting, Ms. Crumbley was called by school officials to tell her the son had been searching for ammunition on his cellphone in class, but instead of responding to the school she allegedly texted her son, “LOL I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.” Then, the kid put a video on his phone indicating a “desire to shoot up a school” & was later caught in class with a drawing of a bullet captioned with “blood everywhere”; hence, another “meeting” with the parents hours before the shooting. And, did mom really then tell the kid "don't do it"?

Opined Larry Dubin, a law professor at Detroit-Mercy U: “Prosecutions of parents in these cases are extremely rare”. Yet, he added, “This case is a significant warning not just in Michigan but throughout the country that prosecutors will be more vigilant in contemplating charges against parents that are negligent in a way in which they manage the security of guns.”
