Petty Insults Often Drive Gang Murders In DC

Believe it or not: While most experts agree gang & drug activity accounts for most big city murders, they warn victims are often killed over petty insults. At least, that’s what’s goin’ down in the streets of DC …

In the second story of a Fox News series about murders in the nation’s capital, we’re told there’s plenty of gangs here, but they tend to be smaller than those in NY, Chicago or LA with smaller turfs to reign over. That doesn’t mean the violence is less of a problem. A Michael Lofton was “murdered for breaking up a dice game … the next year, a close friend was murdered for inexplicable jealousy.” Says DC Witness Editor Trina Antoine: “A lot of these [murders are] just petty arguments – not being able to process anger.” She added most homicides in DC are between “people who know each other” getting into a confrontation that they “didn’t think they could get beyond without a gun.”

As criminologists & local officials told Fox, “rivalries between these gangs or crews may drive killings, [yet] the underlying disputes frequently stem from petty insults” that grow from disagreements over drugs or money or women … or sometimes from a rapper in one crew disparaging another.” Jokes about a rival’s momma on social media can even be the trigger. Obviously, more innocent bystanders, often the young, are caught in the cross-fire and stray bullets. Supposedly, these incidents took off in 2020 and 2021 in the wake of the George Floyd death at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. Finally, the WH recently conceded for first time, the ABSENCE of police officers in DC’s related stand down orders and/or defund/replace the police movement since have not helped the situation.
