Pope Francis Urges Human Adoptions, Pets OK Too

Pope Francis got some grief for recently urging us to adopt more children rather than just pets, but lost in his message was a call to reform today’s rules from hell making adoption of humans harder & more expensive than a heart transplant.

His Holiness is old enough to recall the 50s & 60s when there was a global public service push to solve the parentless orphan problem by urging childless couples to adopt. Then, came the 70s & 80s progressives who saw much abuse of children in those legal proceedings and, instead of tweaking the system to make it safer, overhauled it with rules straight out of Dante’s Inferno and to the point adopting a child could only be achieved by the rich, if then, and often (ironically) through black market opportunists.

As a lawyer during this post-adoption friendly Era, I saw how what should be a joyous journey was too often turned into a nightmare for many wannabe parents. So, here’s a vote for Francis’ call for a more streamlined, affordable adoption laws. As His Holiness said, there’s nothing more “beautiful” than adopting a child … and it should feel like a walk in the park not Hades.
