President Scott’s Appeal To Our Better Angels
Tim Scott’s an articulate speaker who can leave Biden & Trump eating his proverbial dust on POTUS campaign trail BUT won’t rubber meet the road when positive messaging throws cold water on nation’s increasingly cynical voters?
The WSJ’s editorial board sounded impressed with the just announced Scott candidacy in its “Land of Opportunity” op ed. The editors think “the Senator’s optimistic conservatism may stand out in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries.” Ok. But, after “standing out” will the black senator “play well” in the voting booth outside his home state? Won’t it all depend upon how “infectious” the South Carolina senator will be nationwide since, as the WSJ watchers note, “one regrettable reality of today’s politics is that a left-right condominium is preaching that America is a failed experiment.” On the other hand, they conclude, isn’t that the reason to all the more reason to welcome Scott’s mantra that better days are ahead” under a “new American sunrise”?
As 57-yr-old Mr. Scott has personally attested: “I know America is a land of opportunity, not a land of oppression. I know it because I’ve lived it. I was that hopeless kid in America.” As the WSJ editors are themselves inspired by this man’s story, they observed: “He graduated from college & started his own business, and he credits his success in large part to the support of his Christian mother & a local Chick-fil-A franchisee who took an interest in him. Many voters will see the better angels of America’s nature in this story.” So will Mr. Lincoln in Heaven.
