Rain Man Trump’s Cold Tariff War Heats Up

As one blogger sagely put it: “The people who want a hot war with China, Russia & Iran are terrified of a trade war.” Could President “Tariff” Trump & singer Glenn Yarborough both be right in singing: “Baby, the Rain Must Fall”?

Who’d have guessed impresario Elmer Bernstein co-wrote the song made famous by Yarborough after leaving the Limeliters back when the rest of the post-war world was imposing tariffs & other trade barriers on an ever-understanding USA. Then again, who’d have guessed President Trump would quadruple down on his Reciprocal Tariff Policy that’s roiling enemies & foes alike across the globe? Apparently, not the tanking stock market’s experts, as No. 47 urged Americans to find the “patience” needed for his effort to force a level playing field on the world market succeed. Nor did China see the Trump tariffs coming & instead of negotiating hit the US back with new 34% tariff of its own … only to inspire Trump to threaten to retaliate that retaliation with an additional 50% tariff on China if it doesn’t withdraw its new tariffs by Wednesday, April 8.

We’ll see how that works out. But, suffice it to say President Trump repeatedly warned during as well as after the 2024 election campaign that his reciprocal tariff plan … and the inevitable financial pain that would go along with it … was as certain as that Bernstein song which, btw, also warns, “Wherever my heart leads me, Baby, [like the wind] I must go.”  The question remains between Trump & Xi: “Who is going to blink first?”
